Vacaville, CA – Travis Credit Union invites young adults to attend ‘Finance U,’ an interactive virtual event designed to teach youth about financial aid opportunities for postsecondary education, choosing a school and preparing for campus life and admissions. Events will be held on November 20, December 3 and 10.
The program will include special guests and giveaways to engage youth interested in higher education after high school. All youth (ages 13-21) registered for the event will be entered in a drawing to win a new Chromebook. Attendees can register at traviscu.org/finance-u.
Since 2006, Travis Credit Union has come together with community partners to increase student awareness of available state and federal opportunities for financial aid. These events exemplify TCU’s mission to provide financial wellness in the community reflecting the credit union’s “Awesome Cause” of providing financial education, financial literacy and financial advocacy to all it serves.
One of the goals of the event is to ensure students learn about the available financial aid resources from financial aid experts. Last year, the California Student Aid Commission reported that only 54 percent of California’s public high school seniors completed a FAFSA or Dream Act application.
“By promoting a postsecondary education after high school, we are seeking to help youth avoid common financial vulnerabilities and build economic stability for themselves and the communities in which they live,” said Barry Nelson, president and CEO of Travis Credit Union.
“Ensuring that our students know various forms of aid are available is more crucial than ever, especially during this ongoing public health and economic crisis,” said Marlene Garcia, Executive Director of the California Student Aid Commission.
The ‘Finance U’ events are hosted in partnership with Sacramento Area Youth Speaks (SAYS), the California Student Aid Commission, Immigrants Rising, the #WeBelonginCollege campaign and the Personal Statement film, featuring the event’s keynote speaker, Karoline Jimenez.
